COERR Ratchaburi Organized Self Protection Training and Training on Child Rights and Responsibilities

In July 2017 COERR Kanchanaburi organized important trainings for COERR Camp-based refugee staff/community service workers, on the topics of Self Protection; Child Rights and Responsibilies. On July 12-13, training on Self Protection was held in Ban Tham Hin camp, Ratchaburi Province for 12 COERR refugee staff to acquire knowledge and skills in social work through lecture, small group discussion, experience sharing and brainstorming under the close supervision of experienced 3 trainers to enable participants to provide proper counselling and respond to children’s social need and behavior.

Later, trainings on Child Rights and Responsibilities were organized for refugee staff, in Ban Tham Hin camp in Ratchaburi Province on July 18, 2017, for 37 community social workers; and in Ban Don Yang camp in Kanchanaburi Province on July 20, 2017, for 38 community social workers.

The contents were focused on understanding the four- principles of children’s rights: rights to Survival, Development, Protection and Participation, and their responsibilities for acting properly for themselves, family and community as well, with community and social workers’ guidance. One recommendation from the training was to convince every sector that children can be protected from abuses and violation if community pay attention to their voices and respond to their need and safety.

Throughout the training, discussion and brainstorming have sharpened community social workers’ skills in child protection work.

Need vs Want: to have participants identify what they need and what they want. Understand the differences between ‘Need’ and ‘Want’ will enable children to know how to make good decision of what to choose. For example, asking and answering questions technique is used to convince children to compare and decide how to make good use of their limited budget.
